Approval of the ZIM project VeBaS-UAV

Today, four sub-projects of the VeBaS-UAV (UAV system for protection of tree seedlings in forests against bite by game) cooperation project are approved within the framework of the Central Innovation Programme for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (ZIM). Funding is provided by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi), project management agency is VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH. The four members of the R&D consortium are

  • Tholeg Civil Protection Systems,  Welzow
  • ESYS GmbH, Berlin
  • Gesellschaft zur Förderung angewandter Informatik (GFaI), Berlin-Adlershof
  • Fachhochschule der Wirtschaft (FHDW), Paderborn, Bielefeld, Bergisch Gladbach, Marburg, Mettmann

For the development of the innovative, application-specific Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), technical competencies in the areas of digital image processing, object recognition, use of machine learning for this purpose, automatic control of flight manoeuvres, in particular object approximation, control of spray processes during approach, and finally the handling of complex tasks of route optimization are required. The cooperation of several UAS and thus the optimisation not only of one route but of several flight routes is a project topic, too. These manifold competences could be bundled in the consortium of the above mentioned four partners (two SMEs and two research institutes). Coordinator of the project is Tholeg Civil Protection Systems with its many years of experience in the development and application of civil drones.

Field tests are planned in important reforestation areas, which are created in the course of landscape redesign (pictures).

In these areas of disused opencast lignite mines near Welzow, seat of the coordinator of VeBaS-UAV (Tholeg Civil Protection Systems) first applications of the results of the ZIM cooperation project could take place.
